A single mother from Utah’s Facebook post is going viral after she dressed up as a ‘dad’ for her son’s “dads and doughnuts” school event. Her post gaining wide support from parents on social media.
Whitney Kittrell donned a full beard on Wednesday all so her son just so he would have someone to join him at a ‘dads and doughnuts’ event at his school. Whitney became a single mother 3 years ago according to her Facebook post. When her son came home with a letter about the event she said her heart sank.
“I made a promise with myself that I would do anything I could, even if it meant going out of my comfort zone, to give my kids a “normal” life and the same experiences as other kids,” she said on Facebook.
She said she sat her son down — who is in kindergarten — and asked him if he wanted his grandfather to go with him to the event. His response?
He just smiled and said “no. I want you to go. You’re my mom and dad.”
She says she gathered her best “dad’ outfit, painted on a beard and went to have breakfast with her son and all the other children and their dads.
I was so embarrassed,” she said on Facebook. “But I couldn’t help but smile when he introduced me to his little friends saying ‘this is my mom…she’s my dad too so I brought her!”
Kittrell said she posted about it on Facebook for friends to see but since then, she said, it has gone viral. The post having over 2,000 views with comments from many praising her for doing a good job raising her son.
She says on Facebook that she hopes other single parents realize that they aren’t alone and that single parents everywhere are doing the best they can.
“Being a single parent, or any parent for that matter, is a hard job,” she said on Facebook.
