Everyone should have the opportunity to try my granny\u2019s apple stack cake.<\/p>\n<h3>Dried apple filling<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>I use 2 bags of dried tart apples for my filling<\/li>\n<li>1 1\/2 cups sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 1\/2 cups brown sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 1\/2 tsp cinnamon<\/li>\n<li>1 1\/2 tsp nutmeg<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 tsp cloves<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 tsp salt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I start with 1 tsp of the seasonings and then season to taste\u2026.. clove is really strong so I wouldn\u2019t recommend adding any of it<\/p>\n<p>Fill pot with water to about half the apple are covered\u2026..cook till tender. Mash with a hand masher and pretty throughly and add sugars and spices. Let cool till just warm.<\/p>\n<h3>Cake layers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>1 cup shortening<\/li>\n<li>2 1\/2 cups sugar<\/li>\n<li>2 eggs<\/li>\n<li>2 tsp vanilla<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp baking powder<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp soda<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup buttermilk<\/li>\n<li>4 cups plain flour<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp allspice<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp nutmeg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Beat together shortening and sugar.<\/p>\n<p>Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Combine baking powder, soda, and buttermilk in a small bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Stir and add to creamed mixture. Stir again. Sift together flour, salt, allspice, and nutmeg.<\/p>\n<p>Add the flour mixture till you have a stiff dough. Divide into 12 portions rolling thin into a circle.<\/p>\n<p>I cook my cake layers in a cast iron skillet &#8230;. and I use parchment paper cut into 9in circles to size my dough. Bakes at 425 for 10 min.<\/p>\n<p>Remove and let cool completely before icing and stacking your layers. Some people do not ice the whole outside also but I do.
