He got into a car crash which left him paralyzed from the neck down. After his vehicle lost control due to a slippery road, he hit a tree and a lamp post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title main_color\">The initial doctor prognosis was that he might never be able to move his body from the neck down.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>What he went through<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having in mind his condition, Kris was given the opportunity to go through a procedure involving stem cells, which \u2018have the capability to repair injured nervous tissue through replacement of damaged cells\u2018.<\/p>\n<p>This method had no clear guarantee of improvement but Kris felt he had nothing to lose at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Kris began the treatment in April with the help of Dr. Liu, who injected 10 million AST-OPC1 cells directly into Kris\u2019 cervical spinal cord (AST-OPC1 cells come from donated eggs that are fertilized in vitro (i.e. in a petri dish).<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Liu:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTypically, spinal cord injury patients undergo surgery that stabilizes the spine but does very little to restore motor or sensory function.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>With this study, we are testing procedure that may improve neurological function, which could mean the difference between being permanently paralyzed and being able to use one\u2019s arms and hands.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Restoring that level of function could significantly improve the daily lives of patients with severe spinal injuries.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Outcome<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It took Kris only three weeks of therapy to notice the first signs of amelioration. Also, he needed only two months to be able to talk on the phone, write words and control his wheelchair. He also retrieved his main motoric functions.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Kris was able to bring back two spinal cord levels that were responsible for his mobility. Soon, he could regain his basic movements and feel independent again.<\/p>\n<p>Since his miracle treatment, Kris stated, \u201cAll I\u2019ve wanted from the beginning was a fighting chance\u2026But if there\u2019s an opportunity for me to walk again, then heck yeah!
